The mundane story is one that many people have probably experienced. My older sister had asked me to babysit a dog for her while she and her new went on honeymoon. I had told her that it probably wasn't a good idea because I did a lot of traveling for my job at the time and I could have to leave at a moment's notice. This statement may ruffle some feathers, but I have always been more of a cat person. However, I agreed because she claimed no one else could watch her dog. I'm not sure what kind it was but I couldn't believe that small of a dog could produce such a mess. As predicted, I had to travel for work, but I was able to pay someone who would come over and tend to the pooch while I was gone. 

The Dog and the Aftermath 

So, I left the dog in the hands of the third-string dog tender. When I returned home, both my sofa and loveseat had been torn to shreds. The trash can had been dumped and it's contents had been scattered. Also, the dog left piles of poop all over the place and tore up almost every one of the blinds covering my living room windows. At first glance, I was furious because I assumed the girl I had asked to tend the dog never came over. I had only been gone for three days and I couldn't believe the wreckage. After talking to the girl's mother, I found out that the girl (who was only 12 or 13 and her mother was driving her over to my place) had found the place in a state of chaos on the first day. Both of them cleaned it up some of the mess and the second day it was even worse. Her mother told me that they would both help me but she saw no point in trying to clean up the mess if it would just be made all over again. They told me they would help and I declined because it was absolutely not her fault. Anyway, needless to say, I was searching for a furniture store near me on the internet pretty quickly.

The second story isn't so bad but it's embarrassing.  I had some friends over when I was younger and we were all in my room on my bed watching TV. We've gone back and forth a few times because I feel that's a waste of water and electricity. Not only do I think it was a waste, but she would leave anything she found in the washer and dryer in a pile on the laundry room floor. Needless to say, this doesn't help with the struggle.

All puns aside, I do have an idea of how I might get a better handle on the washing machine situation in my house. This year, I am thinking of making a rule that for every new back to school outfit they get, they will donate three old outfits to charity. I suspect that this middle ground will be accepted by both my younger and older daughter, but I could meet some resistance. I am braced to stand firm in my ultimatum and at worst, I will have two unhappy campers on my hand, but I'll save money on back to school shopping.

I know that it is only the beginning of August, but I can't help to feel excited about the fact that the new school year is closing in. What this time means for me is that I will not have to spend all day practically begging in some futile attempt to get my kids to pick up their toys or other junk. My most prominent idea is that I would love to turn one of the rooms into an aquatic room. I don't intend to get on a soapbox or anything with regards to my thoughts on cellphones. I can't tell you how many times my cell phone has bailed me out of trouble. The trouble that would have been much harder to handle back in the days before this convenient technology. Recollections of how things used to be not so long ago hep to put in perspective how useful having a cell phone can be. From car trouble to sending mail, we are all connected so much closer than we ever have been before. 

Interestingly, the tool that can connect us seems to disconnect us, as well. How many times have you had to tell your kids to put their devices down? What about how many times you have to ask your partner for help with something? Now, think to yourself about how often someone has to repeat themselves when talking to you because you were distracted by your phone. In my house, we have a set of rules that are half-heartedly obeyed and enforced with regards to using personal electronic devices. 

I used to be draconian in enforcing the rules with my kids until I realized that I was breaking them as often, if not more than they were doing. I also feel like doing things have changed with this technological advent. What I mean by "doing things" is that normal mundane things like driving, shopping, and even reading have changed so much that without a phone, I feel like I am not as good at it as I once was. I no longer remember people's phone numbers and I wonder if I could drive using a paper map like before. The other thing I have noticed is that people seem more preoccupied with their phone than what is going on around them. My house is like a museum although I am not sure what kind you would call it. In every room of the house except the bathrooms we have a collection of some sort on display. If your household is anything like mine, your couch might be seeing a little more action now that Netflix has released the 3rd season of Stranger Things. If you aren't familiar with the hit streaming TV show, it is a fun nostalgic romp through the early '80s. To spare anyone any spoilers, the show is mostly science fiction with some comedy and romance thrown in for good measure. If special powers, alternate universes, and monsters aren't your thing, I would still recommend it because they aren't mine either and I still love the show. 

The living room couch, however, is getting used a lot more now. Between myself and all my kids watching the show, my poor sofa might be groaning if it could talk. My youngest child isn't really of the age where she's ready for the action this show can bring, but my oldest is making an experience out of the whole thing. She is inviting friends over so they can all watch the show together. I am fine with that, but it's pretty hard for me to watch it with them so I usually end up watching it by myself after they finish an episode. Both my oldest and I have agreed to only watch one episode a week so that we don't binge watch it and get that weird feeling of loss afterward. After reading up on how you can go through withdrawal after binge-watching a show, we decided we wouldn't do that anymore.

The 4th Of July is Coming Up

What are Your Plans for the 4th?

For my family, the 4th means we are going to have a get-together out at my parent's farm. This usually entails some grilling, some homemade ice cream and a lot of noisy firecrackers and fireworks. This 4th of July is going to be a little bit different because my sister decided to get married on that day. So instead of it being an all-day affair of cooking hamburgers and hot dogs while watching a lot of money get blown up, the first half of the day will be spent watching a wedding. My sister has decided to keep it simple and she's going to get married right behind the house at my folks' farm. Whether we like it or not, when the spring season gets here, we are more than likely going to be spending more time outside. Pee Wee Herman had his hay days throughout the '80s while starring in movies, live shows, and Saturday morning kid's programming. Anyone who watched the children's show, which included a fair amount of adults, may remember things like screaming over the secret word of the day, the phrase "Mika lika hi-mika hieny-ho!" or Cowboy Curtis (played by a young Lawrence Fishburne). All in all, it's popularity allowed the show to run from 1986 to 1991, albeit the last year was reruns. 

Let's Talk about Chairry...

One of the things that stick out in my mind about the show is the blueish-green living chair named Chairry. She was always offputting to me and, as a child, I never really understood why. Now that I look back, a talking chair with a giant set of eyes and mouth who occasionally used her armrests to hug people who sat down on her is absolute nightmare fuel. Just look at the picture above to see how creepy that would be to have a recliner in your house that looked like that. In all honesty, I can't really think of any piece of furniture or appliance that would be fun to have around if it was sentient and could move. Just imagine if you managed to make it angry... next thing you know, its got you by the waist and is opening that huge mouth to devour you. Luckily in the show, Chairry was a very cheerful seat that just wanted to be nice. Still, that's just a huge nope from me.

Got a Stain on Your Couch?

It's gross, I know, but we all have accidents happen. I'd venture to say that most people don't mean to drop anything on their furniture that can stain it. However, from pets to kids, there is a lot of room for stains to pop up on your couch or recliner. Dealing with the stains can be an ordeal especially if they have sat for a while. When stains have set into any fabric, you might feel like throwing your hands up in the air and giving up. But wait, there could be some hope! 

My Experience with a Stain

A funny (or not so funny) story from my life involves my nephew dumping a bowl of spaghetti on the sofa. You may be asking how I managed to let something like that sit around until it was dry. Well, he decided that it would be better to just flip the cushion and not tell me than to face the possibility that I might be upset. This also happened in what I consider the second living room of my house and I usually don't go in there often unless I have my nephews over. Fast forward a couple weeks later when I am moving the couch and flipping the cushions to vacuum and I find the nasty surprise. By this point, it had not only stained but dried up into the fabric. I just decided to vacuum all the extra bit of noodles and dried tomato skins. I was amazed at how much lighter the stain was already just by taking out the debris. I would highly recommend vacuuming any set stain first. 

Of course, as with any kind of fabric cleaning, check the cleaning instructions on your couch before attempting anything else. If you can't find any instructions, then test out any cleaners in a spot that's inconspicuous.  

Operation Spaghetti Removal

I could use water to clean that fabric, so I used steam to help loosen up the stain. I used an iron since I didn't have an actual steam cleaner at my home. I just hit the steam button and started loosening the bad boy up. After I decided it was good to go, I put a little bit of dish soap in some water and used a sponge to dap and gently wipe the stain. I wasn't really worried about rubbing it too hard and making the stain set in seeing as, well, it was already set. I just didn't want to mat up the fabric by being too rough on it. I repeated this with just water to get the soap out and it had lightened up some. I ended up letting it dry and I still wasn't happy with what it looked like. 

Attempt two: I broke out the Resolve brand cleaner. I sprayed the cleaner on the couch and let it sit for a few moments. I dabbed it off and gently wiped just like with the dish soap mixture. When I was done with it and it dried, I was pretty much convinced that stain was there for good. Fast forward through one more attempt with the Resolve about two days later and it came out. If you are looking for the spot, you can see it, but only because you can tell the fabric is slightly pilled because of my efforts, not because there is a greasy orange-ish stain. 

Of course, this is my personal experience and it may not work for everyone. Some people have other methods they swear by and they may be better. But if you have been in the same situation, I feel your pain.

Remembering Grandma's

When I was significantly younger, I would visit my grandparents and there are five distinct memories from those days that stick out in my mind. The first memory and the least fun is when my grandpa died. I was too young to understand and other than fish or a cat, I had never experienced death. As I age, I think about what a relationship with him would have been like. 

Now that the sad stuff is out of the way, the next memory is of all the candy my grandma had at her house. From peppermint and butterscotch discs to M&Ms and Hershey's Kisses, my grandma kept all kinds of candy. Most of the time, they were in jars on the counter. I will never forget the time I thought I would be sneaky and try to open a jar and get candy without anyone knowing. I dropped the jar and got scolded, not for breaking the jar, but, for not asking first. 

Another memory I have is how she would take us to the Dairy Queen for some ice cream. Not to date myself, but they didn't serve blizzards at that point, so it was always my choice to get a dip cone. The reason this sticks out in my mind is that we would always go for a drive afterward and listen to some music. It was the only time I would hear my grandma sing outside of a church.  

The last two memories go hand in hand with each other. I will never forget spending any time in her house during the summer season. She had all her couches in her home covered in a plastic protective cover and it was utter misery to sit on those things with any skin exposed. If you spent any amount of time on that couch while you were wearing shorts, you knew you were going to have to peel yourself off of it. I am pretty sure that I left a few layers of skin on those sofas anytime I visited during the warmer months. I understand wanting to take care of your couches and try to make them last longer, but why plastic? There will never be a logical reason, to me other than making sure guests didn't overstay their welcome.

The Relaxation Power of a Recliner

How Far do You go to Relax?

In my admittedly and relatively short lifespan, I have encountered some people who go to great lengths to get the rest and relaxation that they require. In the same time, I have also known people who did not go much distance to get their R&R.  I find myself in the middle ground when it comes to these two types of people.

I can say that my dad is on that side of things and it happens to be much to my mom's chagrin. Luckily, my dad is a man of compromise and they have traveled coast to coast across the country. 

I like to think I am in the middle of the pack when it comes to how I want to relax and get away from things. If I take a week of vacation, I will typically reserve at least two days after the trip to spend time relaxing in my home. I'm not sure why, but it really gets to me to come straight back from a vacation and go to work. I need to be home and unpack and take care of all the follow-up doldrum activities and then have a nice day to lounge about the house before I head back to the salt mines, so to speak. There are a lot of things about the coming spring season that can make people happy.
