A Place for Your Memorabilia

Cabinets And How We Use Them

My house is like a museum although I am not sure what kind you would call it. In every room of the house except the bathrooms we have a collection of some sort on display. Some of the collections are books and they are displayed appropriately on several bookshelves around the house. I can't tell you how many times I have searched for good deals on bookshelves because we need more room for the growing collection. I've recently been taking the kids to local places around Texas to mine for rocks and minerals. We just got back from Mason where we mined for topaz and had a blast. The thing is that while books look really neat and all on a shelf, displaying rocks doesn't quite work well on the narrow shelves of a bookcase. For this reason, I like to put the things we collect inside of china cabinets.

Reasons for China Cabinets

I know it might be some kind of heresy to some to suggest a china cabinet be used to display a bunch of rocks, but hear me out. First off, the doors tend to act as a buffer between spectators and their desire to grab things. When I have friends over who have children, the kids tend to leave the items behind the glass doors alone. Before adding a couple of new china cabinets, I would constantly have to lock rooms and keep vigil so that no children broke anything on display. In the long run, the investment that keeps our things we collect safe seems like a good one to me. The other thing I like about china cabinets is that you can find some fun ways to light the inside of them. With the advent of LED lighting, you can have battery-operated strings of light that don't require any power cord hiding. No drilling holes to make them less of an eyesore.

If there is one thing I love, it's collecting things. Thank goodness my daughters like it too. However, it's easy to become overwhelmed by a collection. Make sure you have the proper way to display your collection by checking out what The House of Furniture has to offer. They have a plethora of different styles of cabinets and shelving so you can display what you want with ease!
