I don't intend to get on a soapbox or anything with regards to my thoughts on cellphones. I can't tell you how many times my cell phone has bailed me out of trouble. The trouble that would have been much harder to handle back in the days before this convenient technology. What I mean by "doing things" is that normal mundane things like driving, shopping, and even reading have changed so much that without a phone, I feel like I am not as good at it as I once was. I no longer remember people's phone numbers and I wonder if I could drive using a paper map like before. The other thing I have noticed is that people seem more preoccupied with their phone than what is going on around them. My house is like a museum although I am not sure what kind you would call it. In every room of the house except the bathrooms we have a collection of some sort on display. Some of the collections are books and they are displayed appropriately on several bookshelves around the house. I can't tell you how many times I have searched for good deals on bookshelves because we need more room for the growing collection. I've recently been taking the kids to local places around Texas to mine for rocks and minerals. We just got back from Mason where we mined for topaz and had a blast. Is Your Sofa Getting Overtime?

If your household is anything like mine, your couch might be seeing a little more action now that Netflix has released the 3rd season of Stranger Things. If you aren't familiar with the hit streaming TV show, it is a fun nostalgic romp through the early '80s. To spare anyone any spoilers, the show is mostly science fiction with some comedy and romance thrown in for good measure. If special powers, alternate universes, and monsters aren't your thing, I would still recommend it because they aren't mine either and I still love the show. 

The living room couch, however, is getting used a lot more now. Between myself and all my kids watching the show, my poor sofa might be groaning if it could talk. My youngest child isn't really of the age where she's ready for the action this show can bring, but my oldest is making an experience out of the whole thing. She is inviting friends over so they can all watch the show together. I am fine with that, but it's pretty hard for me to watch it with them so I usually end up watching it by myself after they finish an episode. Both my oldest and I have agreed to only watch one episode a week so that we don't binge watch it and get that weird feeling of loss afterward. After reading up on how you can go through withdrawal after binge-watching a show, we decided we wouldn't do that anymore. 

Still Watching Too Much TV

We may have made that rule in a half-hearted attempt to limit our time in front of the television, but it isn't working well. It seems that we just find more shows to watch on different days. Maybe the sofa really isn't getting overworked any more than it already has been. Nonetheless, at least we have a comfortable place to sit and ride the emotional highs and lows of all the cliff hangers.

The 4th Of July is Coming Up

What are Your Plans for the 4th?

For my family, the 4th means we are going to have a get-together out at my parent's farm. This usually entails some grilling, some homemade ice cream and a lot of noisy firecrackers and fireworks. This 4th of July is going to be a little bit different because my sister decided to get married on that day. So instead of it being an all-day affair of cooking hamburgers and hot dogs while watching a lot of money get blown up, the first half of the day will be spent watching a wedding. My sister has decided to keep it simple and she's going to get married right behind the house at my folks' farm. There is a massive oak tree with plenty of shade for the small group of people who will witness the event. When it comes to seats for everyone, we will be setting up all the folding chairs we have. 

Usually, we have enough seats for whoever shows up on the 4th. Back when the farm belonged to my grandfather, he built two 15 foot long benches and a picnic table to go with it. He was a welder by trade and while he may be gone now, we remember him through his work and the furniture he left behind. In a few days, however, I imagine there will only be standing room available for some of us. When it is all said and done, it will truly be a time for celebration.
