How Important is Your Bedroom Set to You?

How Important is Your Bedroom Set to You?

How important is your bed for you? Now, how important is it to have a matching bedroom set? It may not be a big deal to some people and it may be bigger for others. One thing is always true, though; your bed needs to feel comfortable for you. Sleep is important and a large part of human existence. Most sleep specialists suggest 7-9 hours of sleep for adults and the number climbs, the younger you are. Since you are spending so much time in bed, your mattress and bed frame need to make you feel good. Losing sleep leads to all sorts of health problems that can limit your potential in life. From headaches and body aches to memory loss, high blood pressure, and lack of concentration, you may not be living your best life if you don't sleep well.

Bedroom Furniture Placement

"Why does my furniture need to match?", you may ask yourself. It doesn't have to, for sure, but you must never overlook the effect that aesthetics can have on your sub-conscience. Consider this for one second; colors and placement can have an impact on our feelings. It's scientifically proven that a clean and tidy room will allow for a more restful night. So, if that environment can have an impact on your quality of rest, it may be nice to have matching furniture in your bedroom. The idea is that the more comfortable you are while in your bedroom, the better your sleep can be when you nod off at night. You may or may not have heard of Feng Shui and how the placement of items in a room can affect your mood and other things. Some people dismiss it as superstition and I understand how they could feel that way. I, however, think that there is no harm in arranging your room in a way that makes you happy.

The Bookcase and the Hidden door

Just Pull the Secret Book

Doors hidden behind bookcases have been used in all kinds of media from episodes of Scooby-Doo to Stephen King books. When it comes to this commonly used device in stories, it may feel trite to some, but to others, it still holds its mystique. I happen to be one that still loves the novel idea of a hidden door in movies and books even if it may be a bit cheesy. I've always thought about how I would use a secret door and the only practical place in my home to put one would be at the entrance to the master bedroom's walk-in closet. Then, the more I think about it, the more I fear the novelty of it would wear off as time goes on. Plus, some people might think I actually am hiding some secret behind the door.  Like I said, it's a novel idea and I do own enough books that I could fill several doors.

Practical Bookcases

If you are like me and you aren't a fan of having digital books, then you may have too many physical ones around your house. I even bought a headboard for my bed that is partially a bookcase. It holds about 40 books and it is full. I found myself having to put a lot of my collection into boxes and into storage. When I came to the realization that I would most likely never get the books back out of storage and read them again, I decided to do something about it. I decided to buy some bookcases and display my favorite books and series. Because I still lacked enough room for my entire collection, I donated the ones I decided I could live without to the local library. One of my friends suggested I sell them on eBay but I didn't want to deal with that. Besides, I want as many local people as possible to read these same books.

Your Recliner can't Rest, Yet!

Your Recliner Can't Rest, Yet!

Just when your recliner thought it was safe and could take a break since the NFL season is over, here comes the XFL to shake things up! While some people are cautious about this new league of football, others are welcoming it with open arms. Get comfy in your recliner because are two things that intrigue me about this new league and I don't mind telling you about it.

First off, the games are not supposed to go longer than three hours. For some, they may not care, but there does seem like a lot of hurry up and wait in the NFL games. I understand that things like injuries and other unexpected occurrences can help draw out the game, but sometimes they seem to go on forever. This length seems to get longer if your team is getting manhandled. The XFL promises faster-paced games and a lot of people say that they are holding up their end of that bargain. Still, three hours is a lot of time to give up especially if you don't have a comfortable place to sit.

Secondly, a lot of people see the XFL as a way for players to get a foothold into the NFL. I Think of it as a way for players who were passed over in the draft to find a second life in this glorious game. My hope, however, is that the XFL may be able to rise to the point that it is a contender to the NFL. If this happens, then we might see an end to the era of drama that is consistent with the complacent, overpaid players in the NFL. Competition is, of course, always good for the consumer and if it does well enough, we may see an inter-league championship between the two.

Furniture Shopping Made Easy

Is There Something in Particular?

For me, I need a new sofa. The one we have has been a good one for several years now. However, the frame has become rickety and the cushions are not as comfortable as they once were. you can definitely tell where everyone's favorite spot is on that big L-shaped couch. While I am sure I could get a few more "miles" out of it, it's time for a new sofa. What made me decide to do it was when my parents got a new sofa just a few weeks ago. I could tell a major difference in comfort level. Not to brag, but the sofa I got was much more expensive than I would normally pay, but I got a great deal on it. My parents' sofa, on the other hand, is not quite that extravagant. My dad is a pretty spartan man and he won't spring for anything he considers to be a waste. Oppulance is one of those things, much to my mom's chagrin. However, Mom does get what she wants when she wants it, but she will compromise when it comes to certain things. I am digressing, but sitting on their new couch made me realize my lumpy, creaking old sofa is on its last legs.

To Set or not to Set?

The question is: Should I buy a set of furniture or should I just get another sectional couch? I am leaning towards getting a matching love seat and sofa set with a recliner that goes with the set. The change of pace may breathe life into the living room without having to paint the walls. I've noticed that that's the room that gets used the most. The dining room furniture hardly ever gets used unless it's crafting time. Maybe it is time to bring back the "no food in the living room" rule.

4 Inexpensive Things You Can Do to Improve Your Living Room

4 Inexpensive Things You Can Do to Improve Your Living Room

In which room do you spend the most time while you are relaxing at home? Chances are that you will say the living room. This room is where most of the action happens in my home. From video games to board games and watching movies to sports, there is a lot of entertainment that goes on each day. Since we use our living rooms so much, it may be a good idea to improve the space where we spend so much time. Here are some inexpensive things you can do to add a bit of swagger to your home.

Now, I understand that inexpensive is a relative term, but some of these ideas will only require effort and a few supplies.

1) Hardwood Floors

If you are lucky, you may have some hardwood flooring underneath that old carpet. If your carpeting has lost its luster, you may check a portion of the floor underneath to see if you have hardwood. If you do, then you can always sand it down and put some fresh coats of floor finish on it and you will have given brand new life to your living room. There is always the option to actually put down a floating floor if you don't have hardwood, but that would definitely depend on your budget.

2) Paint Walls

Painting your walls in your living room is a relatively inexpensive way to breathe new life into it. For the price of a couple of gallons of paint and a few hours of work, you can drastically change the way your room looks and feels. Try painting an accent wall to really make the room pop. Choose a color that works with your current furniture and you can make a big difference in how inviting your living room can be.

3) Accent Furniture

This one fits under the "relatively inexpensive" category. Accent furniture is a way that you can make the living room stand out even more. Adding in a chair or a couple of end tables will not only give more room for decor or for seating, but it also can change the look and feel of your room. For instance, if your furniture is all classic-style, then adding in a couple of modern-style accent chairs can be a good way to shake things up. From colors and patterns to even profiles, an accent chair or table can lend visual appeal to your room for much less than the cost of a new furniture set. Not only will you have a new chair that extra guests can use, but you can show off your decorative skills.

4) De-clutter

This one may seem like it is a no-brainer, but it's easy to let things get away from you. You may not mind that stack of DVDs on the entertainment center, but others may. If your living room is cluttered or dirty, it will feel less inviting to your guests and it can also have an effect on your overall state of mind. Studies have shown that clutter can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. If you take the time to go through your living room and pick up things that aren't necessarily trash (items like movies and magazines) and organize or store them properly, you may find that your room is suddenly a different place than usual. I know I am guilty of leaving all my books scattered everywhere. Perhaps I should buy a new bookcase?

A History of the Modern Dryer

A History of the Modern Tumble Dryer

Nothing can put a wrench in your plans quite like opening the dryer to grab some clothes and realizing they are still damp. When your dryer is on the fritz, you realize how convenient they are to have in your home. The modern clothes dryer is actually a relatively new invention. Even by the mid-'50s, only about 10% of modern households had a clothes dryer in the home. Luckily, today, they are more affordable. Advances in manufacturing and electronics allow them to be made for far cheaper and the result is that most households have one.

The First Dryers

The first dryers appeared around the 18th and 19th centuries. The invention was called a ventilator and consisted of a centrifuge powered by a hand crank. The metal canister that held the clothes was ventilated with holes and placed over an open fire. I would assume that this method of drying clothes out had to have been one where necessity drove the action seeing as the smoke and soot from the fire would leave the clothes smelling like they'd been burnt. Needless to say, no one really took credit for this invention.

George T. Sampson's Dryer

George T. Sampson of Dayton, Ohio was the first to patent a dryer in the United States. He improved upon the original ventilator design by adding a rack and enabling it to be used over a stove. Still not an ideal situation, but at least your clothes didn't smell like smoke.

J. Ross Moore's Electric Dryer

Moore lived in North Dakota in the early 20th century and basically got tired of hanging up wet clothes during the frigid winters in his state. He built a shed and put an oven in there to heat the clothes while they dried. Over time, he developed the concept of the modern tumble dryer. He developed two types of automatic dryers; electric and gas. After a long search for a manufacturer, he found one that would produce and sell his invention in 1938.

After World War 2, the modern dryer had been redesigned by several different companies and was gaining popularity, however, even by the '50s, they were still relatively expensive. In 1955, the average cost of an electric tumble dryer was 230 dollars. By today's standard, that is equal to approximately 2,200 dollars. Modern dryers only cost about 340 dollars on average in 2019. If you reverse the inflation calculation, 340 dollars now would be like 35 bucks in the 50s. It is always crazy to me to think of inflation in reverse.
