Lets Have Some Bedroom Talk

Bedroom Furniture and Your Sleep

It's a topic I can't talk about enough. According to the CDC, one in three people is sleep deprived. Now, this is only my opinion, but I bet I could name a few reasons why people aren't getting enough sleep. With the advent of the cellular age, people have a screen in front of them at all times, it seems. I know my work requires me to be in front of one for almost the entire time. I had a sleep study doctor tell me one time that flat screen TVs, smartphones, and tablets all produce blue light and that it can overstimulate the brain. I was told that I should not look at any kind of screen for over an hour before trying to go to sleep. In trying to figure out why I felt fatigued, I learned a lot of things. The quality of your sleep is just as important as the length of time you are resting.

How Can You Improve Your Quality of Rest?

One of the things that I was told, other than limiting the amount of screen time before bed, was to get a new mattress. A bad one can mess with the quality of sleep you get. A worn out and old mattress can affect things on different levels. Depending on how well you kept the mattress, it could be full of little dust mites that affect the air quality. Most modern mattresses last about 5-10 years on average. As with anything, how they get used can determine how quickly they need to be replaced. But let's face it, a lumpy old place to sleep is not the optimal situation.

Another thing to consider is the aesthetics of your bedroom. The environment around you may play a
huge roll in how well you sleep. You will rest better in a room that is dark, cool, quiet, and free of clutter.  A uniform bedroom may help you, as well.

Home Furniture and Home Accessories

Home Furniture and Home Accessories For Sale

Anyone who has tried to furnish an inviting room for their home knows that furniture is not the only thing that you need to make a room feel nice and inviting. For some reason, it is not very acceptable to have a sparsely decorated room. Even places like doctor's office waiting rooms try to look more like a room out of a home than a place where sick people are sitting around waiting for their time to be seen. Maybe the local DMV can learn a thing or two from doctors and dentists.

Area Rugs

Sometimes what the room needs is just a piece of cloth laying in the middle of the floor. No, I am not talking about your kid's sweater. I am talking about an area rug. In the wise words of The Dude from the movie The Big Lebowski, "That rug really tied the room together". It's strange to think that something designed to be walked on can have so much appeal, but a nice area rug can help transform a room. There are so many styles and shapes of area rugs that the sky is the limit (maybe I should say the floor is the limit?) when deciding on which one suits your room the best. Not only can they ad a new look to your space, but they also help to protect your flooring in high traffic areas so it is a winning situation all around.

Lamps and Lighting

Lamps are another great way to add depth to your room. Lamps and other types of lighting can help add focal points to your room that help draw attention to paintings and decorations that you enjoy and want to highlight for your guests. They are also great when you need to sit down and read something. Whether you are enjoying a book or doing some studying, having a lamp around to shed some extra light is always a good thing. Of course for some lamps, you will need a table to put them on if you don't already have one in your room.

What is an Ottoman, Exactly?

Have You Ever Wondered What an Ottoman is?

I know that the first time I heard anyone talk about an ottoman, it was in history class as my teacher taught us about the Ottoman Empire. However, I am talking about the piece of furniture of the same name. I have heard from various people that this particular item gets its roots from the aforementioned empire. The ottoman was the focal point of a living room. Typically, it was a long wooden table that was meant to span the length of the wall and have piles of pillows and cushions for people to relax upon. They were always sectional pieces that sometimes would wrap around three walls if it was an extravagant piece. More often, however, the predecessor to the modern sofa would fit in a corner of a room and have space for a few people. As the Ottoman Empire fought in wars that spanned from the 15th to the 18th centuries, more and more people began to see this style of furniture.

The Modern Day Ottoman

While the Ottoman might have been the main piece of furniture in the living room back then, it's size and purpose has changed drastically. Now, they are smaller rectangular or semi-circular padded, backless sofas. For most people, the ottoman is merely a footstool to use for relaxing. Also, they are what upholsterers refer to as 'overstuffed'. This term means that very little of the wood used as a frame is seen as it is mostly covered in cloth or leather. Ottomans are also referred to as a tuffet, hassock, or pouf in addition to the term footstool. Sometimes, these items are used in conjunction with a sofa to create a reclined effect so that one can lay down. Typically, they are sold as a piece of a set so that the upholstery is matching, however, they can be purchased separately.
