Memories of the Old Cabin
My Grandfather used to own a lakefront cabin when I was growing up. While my Grandpa has since passed away, I will never forget the experiences I had in that cabin and along the lake. From fishing to listening to coyotes howl right outside the door there are many stories I could tell you about that place.
One time, when I was around 6 years old, my Grandad's brother and his wife came by while we were staying in that area. This was actually a normal occurrence since they lived so close to the cabin. This particular time, my great aunt had brought a belated birthday present for me. It was a larger sized toy dump truck and I proceeded to spend hours playing with that thing. After a while, I managed to make a road system in the dirt driveway that led to the cabin. Now, my grandpa was impressed by my work, but he also wanted me to fill in the dirt in the morning. However, Mother Nature decided to help the work that I had cut out for me by sending a massive storm overnight. We woke up to a delta of deep washed out grooves that were much larger than the ones I had dug for my roads. It had become a two-man job and my grandpa scooped up dirt from the washout and I toted the bucket and poured in the grooves. I don't think that poor driveway ever recovered until we had some granite sand delivered.
The Furnishings
While there are a lot of things I remember about the inside of the cabin, I will always remember the furniture in that place. I was too young to care at that point in my life. You know that time where you could sleep in any position and there were no consequences. Well, I seem to recall my parents mildly complain about aches and pains after spending a few days there. Fast forward to when we sold the place and I was older and had been on my own for a while. I sat down on the edge of one of the beds and on one of the sofas and I looked over at my folks with the newfound knowledge of why they griped about the beds. It felt like the couch was trying to swallow me whole. I don't even know how to describe the way the mattress felt. It was like someone took deer antlers and old socks and tried to fill the mattress with them. Quite possibly, that was the most uncomfortable feeling I had felt from something that is supposed to help you sleep.
