Do You Make New Years Resolutions?

Resolution to Get More Resolution

A few years ago, I made a New Year's resolution to get more resolution. I am probably a lot less funny than I think when I make that joke (although it did get twelve likes on facebook when I posted it there). I decided that I was going to make the leap to a 4K television that year. This was a huge step for me because I still had one of those old box sets. At the time I bought it, flat screens were the cutting edge of technology and out of my price range. Fast forward a few years and those types of televisions are relics of a bygone era.

When I went in to buy the new flat screen TV, I was prepared to drop some serious cash. However, As with any trip to the local electronics megastore, you are always asked if you want to apply for credit. I decided it would be in my best interest to give myself 6 months to pay off this new purchase interest-free. After purchasing the television, I found out that it did not fit the entertainment center in my house. After some modifications that left that center ugly as a homemade bar of soap, I had my TV ready to go.

Everything was fine for a few months. While nothing ever happened to the television set, before the six-month interest-free period was over, they had come out with a new type of high definition technology. Introducing the all-new 4K ultra high definition flat screens... So, there I was, stuck paying for a TV that was already old news. I can think of so many much worse problems to be in so it feels like I really shouldn't have let it get to me. I just tell myself it can't be that much better than what I have now.

Happy Holidays from House of Furniture in Lubbock, Texas

Stay Safe this Holiday Season

Christmas Day is fast approaching and so a lot of people may be in a mad dash to get their holiday shopping and plans accomplished. Traffic on the roads is getting denser as people are starting their vacations travels. Also, this time of year up until after New Years Day, there tends to be an increase in the number of accidents that happen on the road. Sadly, this number grows because there are more drivers who are driving while impaired by alcohol. The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) released a report in 2015 that 40% of automotive accident fatalities during Christmas and New Year's involve people who are driving drunk. It is for this reason that a little extra caution can go a long way while traveling.

Taking a cautious approach while driving may help keep you from becoming the victim of an accident with a drunk driver. Of course, the best thing you can do to keep from being in a drunk driving accident is not to get behind the wheel of a car is you have been drinking. yes, there is a legal limit to how much you can drink, but unless you carry around your own calibrated breathalyzer, you might not want to chance it. Just a minor amount of planning can help keep you and others on the road safer. Call a cab, or have a friend be a designated driver.

Cautious Driving

Even if you haven't been drinking alcohol, your chances of being hit by someone who has is increased around the holidays. There aren't many things you can do other than keep a very sharp eye out for abnormal behaviors by other drivers. If you are following someone who is swerving, you may want to just find an alternate route to your destination instead of trying to pass them. Intersections can be bad places, too. Limiting the number of distractions that you have in your vehicle may help you keep your eyes on the road and on the lookout for dangers. The cold hard truth is that as safe as you may try to be, someone else may not share your same affinity for cautious driving.

House of Furniture wants to wish you a safe and happy Holiday Season. Stay warm and enjoy the time this time that allows you to spend time with your family and friends!

Traveling can be Really Fun!

Where is the Furthest You've Traveled?

If someone asked me that question, the answer would be Anaheim, CA. Living in Texas, I am lucky and I don't have to travel coast to coast to visit either of the seaboards. Living in the middle of the country makes it a little easier to see various areas. For some time now, I have wanted to travel to Maine and also to Washington State. To me, these are the furthest places I can travel and still be in the continental United States. Not to expose too much of myself, but I have a fear of heights so just the act of booking a plane ticket is scary to me. Combine flying with a fear of deep water and you have a recipe for a panic attack to travel by plane over an ocean. Not to say that I won't be able to overcome my fear eventually, but I am in no rush to book a flight to Hawaii even though I am sure I would love it there.

If people asked the question of where I would like to travel most in this world, I would Have to say Japan piques my interest. I would love to go visit Kyoto while the cherry trees are blossoming. Akihabara in Tokyo also seems like it would be a fun place to visit. Of course, Mt. Fuji and Aokigahara forest would be on my list of places to visit, as well. There would be so many places that I would like to visit that I have decided it would take more than one trip to see and do everything that I want.

Another top travel priority for me is to visit Ireland. I would like to see the land of my ancestors and stand in the same places they stood. I would visit Dublin and talk to as many people as I could. I would also visit the Ring of Kerry and the Cliffs of Moher. I really could go on and on about what I want to do and where I want to visit. Talking about it always makes me that much braver and helps me conquer that fear bit by bit.

The Cabin by the Lake

Memories of the Old Cabin

My Grandfather used to own a lakefront cabin when I was growing up. While my Grandpa has since passed away, I will never forget the experiences I had in that cabin and along the lake. From fishing to listening to coyotes howl right outside the door there are many stories I could tell you about that place.

One time, when I was around 6 years old, my Grandad's brother and his wife came by while we were staying in that area. This was actually a normal occurrence since they lived so close to the cabin. This particular time, my great aunt had brought a belated birthday present for me. It was a larger sized toy dump truck and I proceeded to spend hours playing with that thing. After a while, I managed to make a road system in the dirt driveway that led to the cabin. Now, my grandpa was impressed by my work, but he also wanted me to fill in the dirt in the morning. However, Mother Nature decided to help the work that I had cut out for me by sending a massive storm overnight. We woke up to a delta of deep washed out grooves that were much larger than the ones I had dug for my roads. It had become a two-man job and my grandpa scooped up dirt from the washout and I toted the bucket and poured in the grooves. I don't think that poor driveway ever recovered until we had some granite sand delivered.

The Furnishings

While there are a lot of things I remember about the inside of the cabin, I will always remember the furniture in that place. I was too young to care at that point in my life. You know that time where you could sleep in any position and there were no consequences. Well, I seem to recall my parents mildly complain about aches and pains after spending a few days there. Fast forward to when we sold the place and I was older and had been on my own for a while. I sat down on the edge of one of the beds and on one of the sofas and I looked over at my folks with the newfound knowledge of why they griped about the beds. It felt like the couch was trying to swallow me whole. I don't even know how to describe the way the mattress felt. It was like someone took deer antlers and old socks and tried to fill the mattress with them. Quite possibly, that was the most uncomfortable feeling I had felt from something that is supposed to help you sleep.

When You Need a Change of Pace

What I Did to Create a Change

I am not too proud to admit that I get a case of the blues every now and then. One time in particular, I was down in the dumps for about four months and I was feeling like nothing could go right in my life. Now, what I am going to write about is definitely not a substitute for professional help or medication when it comes to clinically diagnosed depression. What I did to snap myself out of my rut worked for me but it might not work for everyone. Basically, what I am saying is that I am not trying to give advice on how to deal with negative feelings, I am just retelling the story of some changes I made that helped me out.

My First Step

This may sound silly to a lot of people, but I started making my bed after I woke up every morning. I know it is just a seemingly inconsequential thing, but what it did for me was give me a sense of accomplishment first thing in the morning. Before, my habit had been to sleep in and take every minute I could to just lay in bed. I would make my bed right before going to sleep and this change was the first change in a domino effect that helped me get to a better state of mind.

My Second Step

I redid my bedroom. Without getting into anything specific, I was used to the way that my bedroom looked and felt. It reminded me of things that were best not to remember. I moved my bed and other furniture in my room out and laid down some old sheets. I painted the walls a totally different color that I personally picked out. After the new shade was dry, the furniture came back in but I placed them in different places. At first, everything felt slightly odd. However, after about four or five days, I began to sleep like I had just bought a new mattress.

I could write that there was a step for each room that I remodeled in my home, but I am sure you get the drift of what I did. I was amazed at how much better the days felt. Don't get me wrong, I still was reminded from time to time about what had gotten me into the state of mind from which I had worked to escape. Most people are creatures of habit, so we take the same pathway through our house, sleep in the same spot, and sit in the same position on the sofa. I had to do things differently than I had been doing for years. It all started by making my bed.
